Today, the NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) released its Semiannual Report to Congress, which highlights the OIG’s accomplishments between April 1 and September 30, 2024.
During this period, the Office of Audits issued 15 reports and identified nearly $3 million in questioned costs—with an additional $100 million in potential savings. This audit work primarily focused on the top three management challenges facing NASA: improving the management of major programs and projects, partnering with commercial industry, and enabling mission critical capabilities and support services.
Likewise, the Office of Investigations was also hard at work—addressing fraud, waste, abuse, misconduct, and mismanagement involving NASA personnel and contractors. Investigators obtained 14 indictments and informations, as well as six convictions and pleas. These efforts led to more than $10 million in investigative returns.
Over the next year, NASA OIG will continue providing objective oversight to the Agency and holding wrongdoers accountable. Upcoming projects will examine NASA’s Human Landing System contracts, Commercial Crew Program, Dragonfly mission, vulnerabilities to climate change, awards to small disadvantaged businesses, and zero trust information technology architecture.
